Romeo L. Lomas, former Kleberg County Commissioner, Precinct 4, passed away on April 6, 2017 at Spohn Shoreline Hospital. He was 79 years old. He was born on September 3, 1937 to Santiago and Estella Lomas in Kingsville, TX. He was married to Doris Lee Lomas, who lost her battle with cancer on July, 2014. He is survived by his daughter, Crystal (Derek) Runyon, one granddaughter, Luna Lee Runyon, and a sister, Hilda Garcia, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a life-long member of Knights of Columbus, Council 2623 and a U.S. Army Veteran.
Romeo Lomas served Kleberg County as a County Commissioner for thirty-eight (38) years and was one of the longest serving politicians in Kleberg County. Mr. Lomas was a true believer in equal opportunity for all of the employees of Kleberg County and diligently supported pay increases and better benefits. He believed in being fair and unbiased with all employees-be it elected officials or minimum wage employees and was not afraid to stand up for what he thought was right. Mr. Lomas was instrumental in the creation of the Kleberg County Human Services and the Senior Center-striving each year to bring more assistance to the community and advocated energetically for the rights of the elderly, poor, and minorities.
He made it his life-long mission to be the voice of all of the citizens of Kleberg County and when he was in office, had an open door policy for all who came with a concern or problem. He heavy-heartedly retired December 31, 2016 leaving a lasting legacy with a promise to continue to be a resource to the community leaders and the community. He looked forward to traveling and spending more time with his granddaughter, Luna Lee Runyon.
A Rosary will be held on Mon., 04-10-2017 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Martin Catholic Church.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tues., 04-11-2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Martin Catholic Church.
