Maria Elena "Helen" Cortez, 64, of Kingsville, Texas passed away on April 25, 2023, in Bishop, Texas.
She was born on August 23, 1958, in Kingsville, Texas to Lucio and Elena Cortez.
Helen was fearless and independent. She was strong-willed and stubborn, those traits defined her. They were part of who she was, and her strength undoubtedly helped her deal with life's challenges. When Helen was first diagnosed with cancer, she fought as hard as she could and surpassed every restriction placed on her. Helen was a strong fighter, but she is now at rest. We know that she is free from pain, but she will be forever missed.
She is preceded in death by five brothers, Benjamin Cortez, Juan Cortez, Lucio Cortez III, Mario Cortez, and Daniel Cortez; two sisters, Anna Maria Serrano, and Maria Luisa Rodriguez; and one grandson, Juan Rolando "CJ" Conde.
Survivors include one daughter, Yvonne Cortez; one brother, Rolando Cortez of Houston; her partner, Jose Muniz; four grandchildren, Adrian, Arturo, Kassandra, and Manuel; one great-granddaughter, Hailey; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Ramirez-Salinas Funeral Home, with a Rosary at 10:00 a.m.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Martin Catholic Church with Father Alfredo Villarreal officiating.
Interment will follow at Santa Gertrudis Memorial Cemetery.
