Obituary

Gilberto Rene Reyes, 77, a lifelong resident of Kingsville, Texas, passed away on October 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on February 13, 1947, in Kingsville, Texas, Gilberto was the cherished son of the late Antonio and Maria Reyes. He was a proud U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran, and a former firefighter at N.A.S. Kingsville, whose service to his country reflected his deep sense of duty and honor. After his military service, he worked as a dedicated operator at Celanese, where he built lasting friendships and a reputation for his hardworking spirit.
Gilberto was a faithful member of St. Martin's Catholic Church and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2623, where he contributed his time and energy to the community. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in all that he did.
During his high school years, Gilberto was a standout athlete at H.M. King High School, where he excelled in both football and basketball. His passion for sports led him to the state finals in basketball in 1965—a proud achievement he carried with him throughout his life. His love for the game endured as he continued to share his enthusiasm at countless sporting events with his family.
Family was at the heart of everything Gilberto did. He cherished moments spent with his loved ones at family gatherings, where laughter and storytelling were always plentiful. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing, often sharing these pastimes with his friends and family.
He is preceded in death by his beloved brothers, Roberto Reyes and Raul Reyes; his sister, Elvia Vasquez; and his niece, Paula Martinez.
Left to honor his memory are his devoted wife of 54 years, Velma T. Reyes, of Kingsville; his sons, Gilbert "Bert" Reyes Jr. (Karie) and Jose Antonio "Tony" Reyes (Crissy), both of Kingsville; his treasured grandchildren, Matthew, Sydney, Camryn, Taylor, and Twister; and his great-grandchildren, Emma, Isaiah, and Isaac. Gilberto is also survived by his brother, Romero Reyes (Yolanda); his sister, Gloria Cavazos; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were like family to him.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Ramirez-Salinas Funeral Home, with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 10:00 a.m. A Funeral Mass will follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Martin's Catholic Church, officiated by Father Alfredo Villarreal. Gilberto will be laid to rest with full military honors at Kingsville Resthaven Cemetery, where his family and friends will celebrate his life and bid him farewell.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Caring Helping Hands Ministries, P.O. Box 498, Kingsville, Texas, 78364, in honor of his legacy of compassion and generosity.
