Gil Vasquez Cruz, age 67, of Kingsville, Texas, passed away on September 3, 2024, in the town he called home. Born on April 13, 1957, in Kingsville to the late Felix and Eulalia Cruz, Gil lived a life full of laughter, love, and lasting friendships.
A proud graduate of H.M. King High School, Gil went on to attend Texas A & I University-Kingsville, where he further nurtured his deep-rooted connection to his hometown. He found joy in simple pleasures and took immense pride in his work as a paint and hardware associate at Walmart, where he made many lasting friendships before retiring.
Gil's personality was as vibrant as his voice was loud. He was known for his booming laughter and an infectious sense of humor that could light up any room. He had a remarkable ability to make friends wherever he went, and it seemed as though he knew everyone. His dedication as a fan of the San Antonio Spurs was evident, as he passionately supported the team through every victory and defeat.
Gil had a deep love for fishing, often spending quiet moments by the water, and music, which filled his life with joy and rhythm. These passions were a reflection of the man he was—full of life, with a heart as vast as the Texas sky.
Gil's memory will be cherished by his three children, Melissa Cruz and Michael Cruz, both of Corpus Christi, and Sarah Castro (Robert) of San Antonio; his brother, Felix Cruz Jr. (Rosie); his sisters, Mary Hinojosa (Jacinto) and Lucy Cruz Vasquez; and his three beloved grandchildren, Juliana Altamirano, Jonah Castro, and Eleanor Castro; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, and countless friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Ramirez- Salinas Funeral Home, with a Rosary at 9:30 a.m.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church with Father John McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow at Kingsville Resthaven Cemetery.
As we remember Gil, let us celebrate the life of a man who brought so much joy to those around him and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
