Obituary

Ernesto Rizo Mechell, 79, of Bishop, Texas, passed away on February 12, 2025, in Kingsville, Texas.

Born on January 5, 1946, in Bishop, Texas, to the late Edmund and Damiana Mechell, Ernesto dedicated his career to the City of Kingsville and was the proud owner and operator of Estella's Diner. He was a devoted member of St. James Catholic Church.

Ernesto's greatest joy was spending time with his family. He had a passion for fishing and firing up the grill—though his BBQ often ended up more charred than planned. His love for his children was immense, but his grandchildren held an especially cherished place in his heart. A man of deep tradition, he made it a priority to pass down the values of family, unity, and togetherness, ensuring that those he loved remained tightly bonded.

As a devoted husband, Ernesto adored his wife, placing her on a pedestal and admiring her unwavering strength. She was the glue that held everything together, and he never missed a chance to express his love, affectionately calling her his "prieta."

A natural storyteller, he captivated those around him with tales from his past, always eager to share a piece of history with his loved ones. Vacationing in San Antonio was a tradition he honored, creating priceless memories year after year. Ernesto embraced life with open arms, living each day with passion, purpose, and gratitude, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Ruben Mechell Sr., and sister, Irma Mechell.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Estella Mechell of Bishop; daughters, Amanda (David) Staff of Bishop, Audrey Alaniz of Bishop, and Amy (Nick) McCraw of Bishop; sons, John Edward (Roxanne) Alaniz Sr. of Ricardo, Ernesto (Laura) Mechell Jr. of Corpus Christi, and Eric (Nina) Mechell of Kingsville; brothers, Robert Mechell and Danny (Chiques) Mechell, both of Corpus Christi, and Joe (Rachel) Flores of Ricardo; sisters, Sara Saldana of Corpus Christi, Irene Vela of Bishop, and Marylou Pena of Michigan; one sister-in-law, Ramona Mechell; nineteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.
