Alice Joleen Amaya, age 86, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026, at Christus Spohn Hospital in Kingsville, Texas.

Alice was born on April 23, 1940, in Stonewall, Mississippi, to Jim W. Downs Sr. and Mildred (Padgett) Downs. She lived through a remarkable period of American history and devoted herself to raising her family while creating lasting memories with those she loved.

Alice was known for her independence, resilience, and strong spirit. Throughout her life she cherished family connections, treasured old memories, and maintained a deep appreciation for the people who remained close to her heart.

She is survived by her children, Amelia Stewart, Marie Rose, Mark Suban and Denise Espiritu Alejandro; her grandchildren, Samuel Stewart, Shayne Suban, and Shannon Suban; and her great-grandchildren, Michael Stewart, Alexis Stewart, and Sarah Suban.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Amaya; her parents, Jim W. Downs Sr. and Mildred Downs; her brothers, J.W. Downs Jr., Billy Ray Downs, Kenneth Downs, and John Vernon Downs; her sisters, Blanche Holloman, Juanita Cox, Annie Porter, and Pauline Pugh, Betty Downs; her beloved son, Warren Douglas "Skip" Sykes, and granddaughter, Joy Melissa "Lisa" Stewart.

Alice held a special place in her heart for her son Warren. Following his passing, she often reflected on him and carried his memory with her. Their bond remained an important part of her life.

The family would also like to express heartfelt appreciation to Alice's dear friend, Terry Resendez, whose friendship, care, and support provided comfort and companionship during Alice's later years.

Honoring Alice as pallbearers are Noah Resendez, Shannon Suban, Julian Cavazos, Juan Torres, Shayne Suban, and Sam Stewart.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Ramirez-Salinas Funeral Home, with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Martin's Catholic Church with Father Alfredo Villarreal officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Gertrudis Memorial Cemetery.

Alice's memory will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her strength, determination, and the unique life story she leaves behind.

May she rest in peace and be reunited with those who went before her.
